We know nothing about the original clock, present in St Vigor’s church tower in 1525. It probably did have an escapement mechanism (invented in 1275) but no pendulum (not invented until about 1650) It was almost certainly driven by weights, as is our present clock. It is likely that it was unusual for a small village to have such an advanced piece of technology, which the clock undoubtedly was. It is possible that it was Richard Wright who installed the clock, he clearly felt strongly enough about it to make sure, by his will, that it was maintained in perpetuity.
